St Martin
About St Martin
This beautiful island has a constant warm temperature so it’s perfect for holidays all year round. It’s also tax- and duty-free!
St Martin is one of the Leeward Islands. It is two islands in one: 'St Martin' belongs to the French West Indies and 'Sint Maarten' to the Netherlands Antilles. A monument commemorates peaceful co-existence between the French and Dutch since 1648. Transit between Dutch and French sectors is no problem: there is no customs or immigration control, the only border being a simple signpost by the side of the road. Legend tells us that French and Dutch commanders in the old days decided not to fight. Instead, they appointed two men to walk around the island in opposite directions. The boundary line was drawn across the island between their starting point and their meeting place! The French have 21 square miles, the Dutch have 16.
