Sights & Excursions

Crete is an island with a most fascinating history, culture and scenery and is a photographer’s paradise. The south-west corner is particularly scenic with tall mountains, gorges of great beauty and rich plains thick with vegetation. Many visitors go hiking in the mountains (bring stout shoes and a small rucksack to carry drinking water and other provisions) to admire the wide variety of flowers and wildlife, especially birds of prey. Car hire is strongly recommended.

The Samaria Gorge
The largest gorge in Europe, displaying awesome beauty, magnificent scenery and unique colours. The 19km route down takes approximately five hours and lets you admire the ‘Iron Gates’, the narrowest passage of which is only about 3m wide, with sides rising to 549m. Bring strong walking shoes!

Frangokastello
A well-preserved and impressive castle built by the Venetians in 1371 as a defence against pirates and Cretan rebels.

Chania
This former capital of the island has a picturesque Venetian harbour surrounded by excellent fish tavernas, bars, cafes and restaurants and a maze of alleys offering plentiful shopping opportunities.

Plakias
The nearest larger village on the south coast, some 48km to the east, and a fully fledged holiday resort with tavernas, hotels, souvenir shops, supermarkets, a chemist and a fairly lively nightlife.

Nude boat trips
The first takes in Palm Beach for sightseeing and hiking, Souda Bay for swimming and lunch and Plakias for sightseeing and shopping. The other cruises to Gavdos Island and includes a grilled lunch with wine on the beach. Both trips are subject to weather and sea conditions and a minimum number of participants.
